The Glen Innes Australia Day committee is urging members of the public to nominate someone for Citizen of the Year in a show of their gratitude for their actions and contributions to the wider community.
Australia Day committee chairperson Jan Lemon wants to encourage people to take past actions into consideration when deciding on who to nominate.
"You've got to put their names forward as a celebration of that effort - it's just so important they get the recognition they deserve," she said.
Although this year there have been ongoing limitations on volunteering due to the affects of COVID, the committee want to remind the community to nominate somebody for their past contributions.
"It's really important to recognise those people who have been long term volunteers," Ms Lemon said.
"Submit a nomination, there are countless people who are deserving."
The aim of the awards is to honour the voluntary achievements of fellow citizens, community groups and community events. There are seven categories for awards including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year, Environmental Champion of the Year, Environmental Junior (School student) and Community Organisation of the Year.
When submitting your nomination Ms Lemon encourages people to provide as many details as they can on the form.
"We are in desperate need of your nominations across all categories," Ms Lemon said.
Nominations close on Tuesday, December 8 at 4pm, with nomination forms available from the council offices or their website.
