THE men of Augusta are excited that the construction of the Men's Shed is complete and the shed is open four days a week. Shed representative Merv Barrett said it was open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am to 3pm and on Saturday from 9am till noon. "We have a pool of 12 guys that have put their hand up to act as shed coordinators on a rostered basis," he said. "They have had a couple of training sessions and have developed a set of guidelines and systems that will enhance occupational health and safety. "The role of the coordinators is to look after shed security and safety in the shed while encouraging men of all ages to use and enjoy this amazing community resource that we have built. "It is hoped that we can attract men of all ages including the younger generation and pass on some of the skills that our more senior members have gained over the years. We have decided to open on Saturday morning in the hope that young men that are working can still call in and use the facilities." He estimated that about 40 per cent of the members will not use the workshop but will visit the social room to play pool, darts or simply socialise. "We have a fully functional kitchen where members can cook their lunch and in the future we will probably run cooking classes," he said. "We will have computers and a TV where we can watch cricket or football." On February 8 a member of the Woodturners Association of Western Australia gave visitors a run down and demonstration of wood turning and use of lathes and tools. Members and new members are welcome.
