The female, who was driving a Hyundai Elantra, collided with a Ford Territory at 1.30 pm on Easter Monday.
It is understood one vehicle rolled after the collision and the female died at the scene.
Police and Roads and Maritime Services closed Bald Nob Rd between the New England and Gwydir highways as the scene was cleared and people were removed from the vehicles.
Emergency services including police, fire brigade, ambulance and the volunteer rescue association attended the scene.
The 60 year old female passenger and 60 year old male driver of the other vehicle were taken by ambulance to Glen Innes hospital where the driver underwent mandatory testing.
Both sustained minor injuries and have been discharged from hospital.
This fatality brought the state’s road toll over the Easter long weekend to two.
Both vehicles will be examined by New England local area command police and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
With more than 270 major incidents across the state during Operation Tortoise as of yesterday afternoon, police appealed to drivers to be patient and drive according to weather conditions.
