She is Navanka Fletcher who grew up in Glen Innes, leaving only to do a business degree specialising in Tourism at Southern Cross University in Lismore.
Before she was appointed, she said two years ago that her aim was “to get a younger audience" going to the Celtic Festival.
She added: “The problem with the sole focus on the older audience and the grey nomads is that when they have moved on there would be no one to replace them, and audience numbers would dwindle, so we want to make a more diverse festival that appeals to the older and younger demographic.”
She described herself as “a fifth generation Glen Innes person”.
When she was studying in Lismore, she told the Examiner: “The reason I am doing this course is because I am really passionate about Glen Innes and I’d like to come back home and work in the tourist office.”
Which is exactly what she has done.
The job was advertised on a salary of $60,689 to $66,991 pa (plus super).
The council described the role as a “challenging position” for “a professional, energetic and proactive Event Coordinator”. “You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and effective oral and written communication skills”.
Before getting the job, Miss Fletcher said: “When I started High School there was a youth council in Glen Innes so I served on that for a while and then a couple of years ago when I was 19, I decided I would join the Celtic festival committee and help out in a more official capacity, our aim was to try and encourage young people to come to the festival.”
