Children are vulnerable road users. Their small size, difficulty in judging speed and distance, and unpredictable behaviour puts them at risk from traffic.

To enhance road safety and the safety of children, the Minister for Local Government has encouraged councils to focus on patrolling school zones on school days.
Glen Innes Severn Council reminds all motorists to take extra care on the roads during the up-coming school vacation, and to observe road rules in school zones during school terms.
“At all times during the year,” Mayor Cr Steve Toms said, “motorists need to be alert to the particular hazards associated with school zones and with younger persons using our local roads as pedestrians and as passengers in motor vehicles.”
Common School Parking Zones
No Parking: You cannot stop your vehicle unless picking up or dropping off passengers. You may not stop for more than two minutes, and must remain within three metres of the vehicle.
No Stopping: You cannot stop on a length of road to which a No Stopping sign applies, for any reason.
Bus Zone: You must not stop or park in a bus zone for any reason.
Some Important Points
Always check regulatory signs when parking or dropping off children around schools.
Never allow your children to exit a vehicle into a traffic lane. Always use the safety door. The safety door is the rear door, closest to the kerb, footpath or gutter, and away from the road.
Always drop off and pick up your children on the school side of the road.
Never double park. Double parking blocks other drivers’ vision, forces children onto the road, and obstructs the flow of traffic.
Children up to 10 years old should always be supervised when near traffic. Children up to 8 years old should always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road, or walking near traffic.

Heavy fines apply for school zone parking offences.
