It all starts on Monday, November 12 when shopping at participating outlets scores entries into one of four draws leading up to Christmas. Glen Innes Severn Council has kicked in $10,000 to the prize pool, along with additional sponsorship from Glen Innes Highlands Visitors Association and Best Employment.

Organisers have opted to distribute 40 $250 gift cards as prizes (10 cards at each of four draws) to spread the cheer a little more evenly, instead of a major prize being redeemed at one store.
“And noone has ever complained that they haven’t won enough money,” the organising committee’s Moira Munro said.
The gift cards work as preloaded debit cards that can be used in any of the participating businesses, and not all in one go.
The first big draw coincides with the switching on of the Christmas lights in Town Square on Thursday, November 29. Subsequent draws are on Saturdays, December 8, 15 and 22 at 11am.
You don’t have to be present to win but it may pay to do so. Another 21 $50 gift cards will be given out randomly to shoppers throughout the promotional period, and randomly throughout the area covered by participating businesses.
So far 20 businesses have signed up for this year’s Spend in Glen Innes Highlands, but Mrs Munro expects many more to pile on as the promotion gets underway and is aiming for 60.
The types of businesses that get involved cover a broad spectrum. Mrs Munro said last year a real estate agency put in entries each week on behalf of the tenants who had paid rent, giving them a chance in the draw.
It costs businesses only $50 to participate, and Mrs Munro feels that’s a good investment to increase foot traffic and be a part of the group advertising.
It’s a marked decrease on the $400 participation fee when then-named Spend in Glen first started, 11 years ago. Mrs Munro said this year’s low participation fee reflects the trying conditions that many local businesses are dealing with in the face of the drought.
The Spend in Glen Innes Highlands promotion team is a sub-committee of BIG, pushing the strategy to keep the dollars local, to create jobs in the community.
