Made in Glen opened on Grey Street a little over a year ago, in April 2018, but will not live to see its second birthday.

Owner Laura Hamilton said she feels like she is letting down the entire town of Glen Innes, particularly her regular customers.

The closure could mean another empty shop-front on Glen Innes' main street with the Grey street store planning to close its doors for the last time at the end of May. The store was shuttered for some time before owner Laura Hamilton saw an opportunity to replace a similar business that had itself recently closed.

"Mum, who owns the business, is a mad crafter and sower, didn't fancy the idea of going out of town to buy what she needed, saw that there was an opportunity there," said David Lewis, her son and conscripted business assistant.

Made in Glen sells fabric and craft supplies and also offers an opportunity for producers to resell the finished good to their customers.

Mr Lewis said Glen Innes has a big craft community - partly due to famously dodgy winter weather.

"Sowing a sweater means there's something warm on your knees as you're working!"

The store did good business, he said - for six months.

"Yeah absolutely. No-one was going to retire a millionaire but that was never the intention, the bills were paid, the rent was paid, the lights were still on. There was a bit of money left over at the end and we were able to expand the product range."

They aim for product at a mid-range price point, not "cheap crap", but also within range of what their customers can actually afford. They also aim to buy Australian. David said they store had done surveys which show they sold the same product on average 10 per cent cheaper than a big city department store.

Prices will drop even further, with most of their range to be sold off on sale before an anticipated June closing date, though negotiations with the landlord continue.

Another craft store, Artisans of the Glen, was also recently threatened with closure, though not for business reasons.
