Family members Jake and Laclan O'Brien, and friend Jenny Chapman, will be shaving their hair to raise money for Jake's uncle Simon O'Brien at a two-day market event to be organised at the New England club on May 17 and 18.
Simon is Jake's uncle. He was eleven hours into a holiday in Fiji when he fell from a fourth floor balcony in heavy rain. It was two days before his 45th birthday.
"Our town does that, we've always supported every fundraiser for every family that needed it. We've never ever thought we would need it," said Joan O'Brien.
Doctors are hoping he will walk again, but the injury is no longer a matter of life and death. He'll spend months in the Princess Alexandra hospital in Brisbane. Simon is a self-employed window tinter who lives in Pottsville, so he has zero income but will have to pay for accommodation, travel and other expenses.
Jake estimates it's taken two to three years to grow his enormous beard and blonde hair, but it'll take seconds to cut it off at 2.00pm on Saturday.
The two-day event will involve Friday night raffles and a BBQ at the New England Club, followed by a car show in King Edward Park on Saturday.
They're hoping to raise $10,000.
