Roadworks started this work, and will continue until May, to improve a 1.3 kilometre stretch of the highway between Ryanda Creek Road and Stoke Farm Road.

"The New England Highway is a vital transport and freight route through the Northern Tablelands, and this section of road is used by about 2700 vehicles each day, more than 20 per cent of which are heavy vehicles," Mr Marshall said.

"Transport for NSW started this improvement work this week, which will not only provide a smoother ride once complete, but will also help sustain 15 jobs in the region.

"Works include widening road shoulders, installing safety barriers, drainage improvements, pavement works, resurfacing and line marking.

"The project will be carried out from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 2pm on Saturdays, and is expected to be complete by May, weather permitting."

The community will be advised in advance if any work is needed outside these times.

Mr Marshall urged drivers to be mindful of changed traffic conditions.

"Traffic control and a reduced speed limit will be in place for the safety of workers and road users," he said.

"Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control."

The project is being delivered under the State Government's Safer Roads Program.
