It is a region which includes clubs throughout the New England and North West, including Armidale, Inverell, Guyra and Tamworth clubs.
But in 1991 there was a boundary change, which saw the local Rotarians become the most south-western members of the 9640 district. A lot of the clubs in that region are based on the Gold Coast, along with a few others in south west Queensland, as well as the Northern Rivers area.
More stories:
In recent years the club has been lobbying to move back into 9650 where it could be closer to Rotary Clubs within its own district, and it came to fruition last week, when the move became official from July 1.
Several Glen Innes Rotary Club members were in Armidale on Saturday evening, for the changeover dinner for Rotary District 9650.
It was a homecoming for the club, and the new district governor, Lorraine Coffey, called the Glen Innes members to the front of the room, where she welcomed them back into the region.
Speaking to the Examiner this week, Lorraine said Glen Innes members had approached the 9650 executive to see if the local club could return to the fold.
The district took up the cause and began lobbying the Rotary hierarchy, something that has continued for the past couple of years, to get Glen Innes back in its region.
“They’re only an hour away from Armidale, but quite a long way from some of the clubs in Queensland,” Lorraine said.
“They wanted it and we pursued it,” Lorraine said. “And we are delighted to have them back.”
The local Rotary Club meets on Monday nights, at the Glen Innes & District Services Club.
